Did you know that everything with a temperature above absolute zero emits photons? These particles of light are a fundamental property of matter and are known as thermal radiation or black body radiation. The number and frequency of photons emitted by an object depends on its temperature, with hotter objects emitting more photons at higher frequencies.

Nerves, photons, and the electricity coursing through our bodies – these fascinating aspects of human physiology are often overlooked in our daily lives. We are constantly surrounded by energy, both within ourselves and in the world around us. In this blog post, we’ll explore the interconnectedness of nerves, photons, and our thoughts, shedding light on the intricate workings of our bodies and minds.

Even as you read this blog post, your body is emitting photons. However, these photons fall within the infrared range, making them invisible to our eyes. Nonetheless, the human body not only emits photons but also absorbs them. Our eyes use photons to perceive the world around us, while our skin utilizes them to produce vitamin D when exposed to sunlight.

Now, let’s shift our focus to the incredible network of nerves that permeate our entire bodies. Nerves serve as messengers, transmitting signals from cell to cell. They carry electrical charges, and their ability to conduct impulses is referred to as membrane excitability. Nerves also possess a membrane potential, which is the difference in electrical potentials between the inside and outside of the cell. In a resting state, our neurons are polarized and maintain a membrane potential of approximately -70 millivolts (mV).

The intricate dance of ions plays a crucial role in the generation of electrical charges in our nerve cells. We have gates within our nerve cells that either allow or prevent charges from passing through. On one side, we have positively charged sodium ions, while on the other side, we have negatively charged potassium ions (resulting in an overall negative charge within the cell). This delicate balance of ions allows nerves to conduct impulses effectively.

But why is all this electrical energy important? Well, think about it this way – when you’re sitting calmly, your energy requirements are relatively low. However, when faced with a sudden threat, like a bear in the woods, you would need a significant surge of electricity to fuel your fight-or-flight response. These electrical impulses are referred to as “potential energy” within your body, and they are triggered by your thoughts and emotions. In essence, your thoughts and emotions are the electricity that drives your actions and reactions.

It’s crucial to consider where we are expanding our energy. Are we caught up in far-fetched scenarios and unnecessary worries, feeding energy to the imaginary bears in our heads? Are we investing our energy wisely and focusing on what truly matters? These questions prompt us to reflect on our thoughts and emotions and the impact they have on our overall well-being.
