The Importance of Childhood

Written By: Jill Spirithorse

Most young children thrive with structure and routine, but they are not above developing new routines and rules in their playtime when the old rules are no longer relevant. Children will most often settle their problems among their peer groups on their own. Sometimes though our egos as adults tell us we must constantly resolve our children’s petty spats. Children are natural problem solvers and negotiators if we give them the chance to learn.

The Importance of Childhood

When someone in the peer group breaks the rules, the other children will call them out. After which there may be an argument, anger and some tears. This is okay. Remember kids are also developing emotionally and learning to speak up for themselves, they need these challenges and to be able to develop the skills to solve them. When an agreement isn’t reached they may part ways or separate into groups. Usually, without adult interference, kids will find their own resolution.

So what should be the role of the adult be? Obviously, if a spat gets out of hand, as in fists flying, kicking, throwing rocks, etc, you should intervene at that point. Otherwise, simply be ready, the children may choose to discuss the issue with you. Try to be unbiased and don’t blame, just listen and if the children are capable, let them come to their own resolution.

The Importance of Childhood

Children have a healthy balance of knowing the rules of games but not being above throwing out the rulebook when it comes time to play with pure imagination. Playtime should not be interfered with by technology, such as Ipads and phones. It is so crucial to many areas of mental and physical development for them to learn to be okay playing by themselves or with peers, preferably outside.

Many people today would rather give a child technology rather than letting them get bored. However, a wonderful thing happens when children get bored, they learn to use their imagination and creativity, which is their intuition. We do not need to fill every moment of a child’s day with technology. We also do not need to pressure them to read before kindergarten. They will learn all of that soon enough.

Let them have their childhood, let them play in the mud, let them bring home a turtle and learn about it. Don’t rush to pick them up when they have a little fall. Let them develop their independence and intuition naturally, as kids have for centuries. They don’t need a smartphone, they do not need a television in their bedroom, and they do not need an expensive trip to Disneyland.

They need experiences in everyday activities and life, not things. Let them learn to make their own toys from found objects, let them learn to draw, paint. Let them experience a variety of music from the ’50s, ’60s, 70’s, orchestral, and more. Who knows your inner child might come to life as well!

Perhaps the children, in some ways, are actually our teachers, we have so much we can learn from them. Children often have a natural sense of compassion, that is unconsciously taught out of them by the adults. Let us not interfere but rather guide them.

Why not take some time out today to ask why, as a child would. Give yourself a real reason to question your values too. Do they resonate with you? Why do you believe what you believe? Are you simply mimicking what you were taught? Get in touch with your inner child. Do you need to create a new rulebook for yourself?
