Spirits of the Drum

Spirits of the Drum

“Yes, there is a Spirit in the body of the drum carved out of the trunk of a tree;
there is a Spirit in the skin of the drum itself.
All this, plus the Spirit of the person playing the drum,
becomes an irresistible force against any immovable object.”
– Babatunde Olatunj

Some people have read my bio and have asked about drumming. I can only answer from my own experience. I like to drum outside, around a fire (if possible) and during darkness. But I have also drummed indoors, by lantern light and in broad daylight. I use drumming to connect with the spirit realm. I open with an invitation for any positive energy to enter into the drum circle and be present with the participants. I then start drumming and in a very short amount of time, it is like I disappear and someone else comes in to play the drum.
It is difficult to explain what happens. I step out and become an observer. I often see visions of entities come to join the circle. The drumming does not stop when they appear to me. I acknowledge their presence and continue to observe. One evening on the night of the full moon, I witnessed seven Native American maidens come down a hill in single file, their feet keeping time to the drum in the Traditional step. They entered the circle, danced around the fire and stood behind the female participants. I do not know the language but I perceived they sang of the feminine. After a while, they came into the middle of the circle and one-by-one stepped into the flame and arose with the smoke.

“The vehicle of ascension to the sky realm of the Sun, to the territory of illumination, can be the drum.
The pulse of the drum frequently carries the shaman from the underworld, through the roots of the
World Tree, up the body of the tree that transects the middle world or earthly plane, and finally,
to the glorious summit of the Sacred Tree whose crown embraces the shining heavens.”

Spirits of the Drum

Another time in Ramah, New Mexico, a young Native boy of about eleven or twelve came outside the circle. He first appeared out of the corner of my eye, then he stepped behind me. A few minutes later I felt the drum beater being pushed forward. I almost dropped it. He did this three times as I heard him giggle. Then he showed himself and sat as I drummed. He has come to visit the drum circle several times, always announcing his arrival by pushing the drum beater as I drum.

Entities will also enter the circle through the smoke. Suspended above the flame, they move to the rhythm of the drum. Participants have taken photographs during the drumming (attached) and have captured orbs, ectoplasm, lights and have felt the presence of these entities. It has been suggested that orbs are how entities travel in the higher realms. I think they come for healing, celebrations and the general awakening of our inner being to connect with the Great Mystery.
One night I came after work and was not in the mindset to drum. I pushed aside my apprehensions and completed the first round. At that point, a Spirit Guide came to me and told me I was not prepared to drum. She told me to go the side and pray for forgiveness for and ask for assistance. I was to make an offering of tobacco and water. That night I drummed three times. The third round was for Thanksgiving. I asked any positive entities that wanted to join our circle to come. Participants photographed thousands of orbs joining us in celebration. Later they showed a photograph of me when I was talking to the Spirit Guide. I huge red orb was seen where the Guide had stood. It taught me a lesson in diligence and redemption.

Years ago, my Native Teacher and I were driving from California to Minnesota. In Wyoming, the highway wound through a canyon that was bordered by tall, red-tinted Standing Rocks. When we entered the canyon I heard the sound of drums and could see the rocks moving to the beat. I asked my teacher if she could see what I was seeing. She told me the rocks were the Ancient Ones dancing. She said, “When they stop dancing, the world will end.”
I hear their footfalls when I drum.

“Remember that drumming opens portals to the spirit world, draws spirit in,
and opens you up to receive it.”
